American Airlines operates the world's largest commercial airline fleet with 840 aircraft carrying around 80 million passengers a year. Launched in 1981 with 283,000 members, it has now grown to more than 45 million members world-wide, claiming more than 3.4 million awards in 2001. AAdvantage members can earn mileage credit by flying with American, American Eagle and other airline participants. Members can also earn mileage credit from other AAdvantage programme participants including hotels and car hire companies.
