Islands & Coasts |
|
The country's onshore ecosystems are of extreme importance. The coastline's
length is 15,000 km in total (of which about half is the coastline of islands)
where there are sandy beaches, sandy strands, dunes, craggy coasts, onshore
wetlands (lagoons, morasses, periodically flooded areas, salty fields, shallow
brackish waters etc.)
An essential element of the Greek tourism product peculiarity is the island
phenomenon. A total of 227 inhabited islands (of which 164 are washed by the
Aegean Sea) are part of the Greek territory. Still, only 78 islands have more
than 100 inhabitants (1991 Greek National Statistical Service Census). 59.9% of
the whole country's hotel units, 62.2% of the available rooms and 62.2% of the
hotel beds is concentrated on the Greek islands.
Because of the tremendous variety in the character of the country itself
(hundreds of islands, thousands of kilometers of coasts, many mountains in the
mainland and the bigger islands, a rich flora and fauna, more than a hundred
spas with mineral waters of many healing qualities, an intense cultural as well
as social life), the activities offered to tourists are also of an incredible
variety: in the following pages learn about going out and gastronomy, yachting,
sailing and cruises in the greek waters, other water sports, tours, golfing and
other sports, extreme sports, trekking, mountaineering and skiing, ecotourism,
religious tourism, health and fitness tourism, conferences and meetings.

Flora and Fauna |
|
The flora of all the regions of our country is the richest in Europe, following
the Iberian peninsula's, with more than 6.000 species and subspecies, of which
700-750 are indigenous, that is they can be found only within the boundaries of
the greek territory. Greece is the richest country in Europe in indigenous
vegetation.
Equally rich is the variety of fauna species living, nesting, propagating or
migrating in the greek regions, and particularly 116 mammal species, 422 fowling
species and sizable fish fauna (of the 579 fish species of the Mediterranean
Sea, the 447 have been registered in the greek seas).
